Jeff Thruston

I work mostly in marble and alabaster.Marble is my first love. I like the challenge of its strength and it's durability in the outside elements. Once a piece is outside, size is not an obstacle. I prefer larger pieces to small but have learned to resist the temptation to make things as big as possible. I love both figurative and abstract work but am presently doing mostly figurative. There is more of a storytelling element in figurative that I am drawn too. Storytelling is a big part of my work. The figures actions are what tells the story and compels the viewer.

My stone sculpture has shown throughout the south including Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Virgina. I teach stone carving Spring and Fall sessions of Albermarle County Open Doors Community Education classes. Teaching has giving me the biggest thrill of seeing students discover stone carving for the first time. I am also very excited to have been accepted as an associate member of the McGuffey Arts Center in June 2006.
