Al Francis

A. L. Francis is a self-taught stone sculptor who, after a life-long but unexplained desire to work in this medium, began to carve when he was 52. With the help and encouragement of a local sculptor, he began his journey into the world of stone carving.

Al states, "Each piece, whether realistic or abstract, is a collaboration between myself and the stone - from a form that totally presents itself at the onset to one that develops and changes through the process of carving. I am fascinated with the color of the raw stone itself; filled with anticipation as I inspect it and see hints of what it might become."

In 2000, Al became a founding member of the Virginia Stone Carvers Guild. The organization now has 14 members. The group supports both professional sculptors and those new to the experience of stone carving. Members have frequent group shows; some of which include hands-on demonstrations of their skill.

Als sculpture has been exhibited in numerous Central Virginia galleries and in New York and he has been juried into and won awards in a number of shows. His work is included in many private collections. In addition to his own work, he has been teaching adults and children for the past five years.
